Who is Jesus ?

1

The Problem

Who is Jesus? What is the gospel? What does it mean to become a Christian? Do I really need any of this?

Maybe you’ve asked questions like these. Or maybe you’re not even sure what to ask – you just know something is missing.

Jesus came to save us from the terrible brokenness of this world – a brokenness that was caused by our rebellion against God.

But maybe you don’t feel like a rebel – maybe you’ve lived a fairly decent life, and you just wonder why things seem empty and disappointing. Or maybe, tragically, you’ve suffered at the hands of others. What does Jesus have to offer you?

The truth is that everything wrong in this world can be traced to one source: mankind’s rejection of God.

God, in his perfect goodness and love, made us to know him, to enjoy him, and to reflect his nature. But we, every single one of us, rebel against him. And because God is also just, he does not overlook our rebellion. Everything bad in this world is the result of our rebellion against God, and of God’s just, righteous judgment against us.

That doesn’t mean that everything we suffer is our own fault, and it certainly doesn’t mean that God is indifferent to suffering. But it does mean that all the evils in this world, including the wrongs we commit and the wrongs committed against us, share the same ultimate origin and require the same ultimate solution.

The Solution

That ultimate solution is Jesus. He is God the Son, fully and truly God. He also took on a full, true human nature, lived a real human life in perfect obedience to God, and died a real death, unjustly condemned and executed on a cross outside of Jerusalem.

But Jesus did not simply die as a victim or a martyr. On the cross, He was accomplishing the salvation that God lovingly planned from before creation. God the Father himself placed upon his Son the guilt and the just punishment for all the rebellion of those who would come to believe in him. On the cross, Jesus died in our place.
Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead. He appeared to many people, fully and truly alive. He then ascended into heaven, and some of those same people watched it happen. He is now in heaven with the Father and will one day return as judge and king – once and for all to rid the world of sin and evil and to establish a new heavens and new earth, where his people will reign with him forever.

What Does this Mean for You ?

You need Jesus.

Jesus is the one whom God the Father has appointed to reign over all things and to rescue all those who believe in him – from our own sin first and foremost, and also from all the sin and suffering of this world.

And the promise of God is this – all who turn away from sin and turn to Jesus, trusting him as Son of God, Savior and Lord, are forgiven, loved, welcomed, and guaranteed life with him in the new heavens and new earth, free from all sin and all suffering forever!

This is the gospel – the good news of who Jesus is and what he has done, according to the plan and will of God the Father, to save us.

Grace Community Church is made of former rebels against God, who have experienced this same gracious salvation. We want to tell you about Jesus – about what he has done for us, and about what he can do for you.
